What "Custom" Actually Means — and What It Costs in the GTA

What “Custom” Usually Means (and Doesn\’t)

Most companies selling “custom” doors mean one of two things: either they offer a range of standard doors with a colour choice, or they’ll modify the width or height of a catalogued design. That’s customization, not bespoke manufacturing. Real custom work means the door is designed and built from scratch to your opening, your spec, and your architectural intent.

The factors that drive the price of genuinely custom work: species of wood or material grade, glass insert area and glass type, hardware specification, finish quality (factory spray vs hand-applied), weatherstripping and sealing quality, and installation complexity. A basic custom wood door starts around $3,500 installed. Arched, oversized, or multi-panel entries typically range from $6,000 to $15,000+ depending on complexity.

Why It\’s Worth Understanding

Homeowners who understand what they’re paying for make better decisions and end up more satisfied with the result. When you understand that 40% of the cost of a premium door is in the hand finishing, you stop comparing it to a catalogue price. You’re not buying a door — you’re buying a piece of custom millwork that will be on your home for 30 years.
